O&G

I was convinced I would hate O&G even before I started the rotation. It was due to deep emotional trauma I experienced while growing up; better not ask unless you want to listen to non-stop unreasonable bitching from yours truly.

After 3 weeks of O&G I'm glad to say I have not changed my mind (it's fun being stubborn, you should try it). However to be fair, O&G is undoubtedly cool since you get the best of both medical and surgical experience and it is a fresh change from general medicine.

There's something very frustrating about standing around for 7 hours average waiting for the woman to pop out her baby. Mostly the 7 hours thing (er duh), but also there's no sense of satisfaction whatsoever since medical students are not allowed to participate in any ways. So yay for you lady but what's in there for me?

The world doesn't revolve around me, I know as much, but sometimes I would like it to.

So many times I have noticed that the fathers will stay by the mothers' bed even with the newborn babies bawling their eyes out in one corner of the room. They won't take their eyes off the women. Sometimes, I can actually feel the love in the air (I'm aware it sounds tacky but unfortunately true). I have seen several cry and honestly I... I just don't know what to say.

Until the grandmothers come in and make a beeline for the babies. What's up with grandmothers and spoiling love in the air? *Rolling eyes*

The G bit of O&G does offer some things medical students can do like bimanual examination and speculums and assisting in hysteroscopy. I have never truly appreciated the fact that I'm a female student before this rotation. So many of my male firmmates have been rejected by patients that it's very easy to laugh and point at them. So much for having a penis. Hah!

Pfft. I've had my laugh. Back to work.
